UPDATED TO REFLECT CHANGE IN TRUCK RESTRICTIONS
I-70 BRIDGE REPAIRS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK
SUMMIT COUNTY – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close one lane of westbound Interstate 70 at the Silverthorne Interchange (mile 205) beginning on Monday, May 12, for expansion joint replacement.
CDOT will close one lane, reducing westbound I-70 to a single lane through the area, 24 hours a day, as follows:
Monday, May 12: Right lane closed beginning at 7 a.m., remaining closed until noon on Friday, May 16.
Monday, May 19: Left lane closed beginning at 7 a.m., remaining closed until midnight on Thursday, May 22.
Drivers should anticipate delays through the area, with longer delays during the morning commute. The speed limit also will be reduced to 45 mph.
Both lanes will remain open through the weekend of May 17 – 18.
Due to safety concerns from the steep downgrade into the interchange area, the following restrictions will be in place for ALL WESTBOUND COMMERCIAL VEHICLES OVER 26,000 GVW*:
7 a.m. to 7 p.m., commercial vehicles will be detoured onto U.S. 6 at Exit 216, just east of the Eisenhower Tunnel, then over Loveland Pass and through Keystone, rejoining I-70 at the Silverthorne Interchange, just west of the work zone.
7 p.m. to 7 a.m., commercial vehicles carrying non-hazardous loads will be permitted to use I-70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel and points west. To prevent possible merging incidents near the work zone, I-70 will be reduced to a single lane, beginning at the west portal of the Tunnel and continuing through the Silverthorne Interchange (eight miles).
CDOT maintenance crews have made temporary repairs to the expansion joint, allowing the bridge to be fully functional until the permanent repairs are made.
Since CDOT has determined the expansion joint should be replaced as soon as possible, it is being done in advance of the upcoming paving operation from the Eisenhower Tunnel to Frisco. That project will begin just after Memorial Day. Specific project information will be distributed in the next couple of weeks.
Motorists are reminded to please Slow for the Cone Zone, stay alert and pay attention to and obey all work zone/advisory signs and flaggers.
Traffic information about this or other CDOT projects is on the cotrip.org website or by calling 511 statewide.
