WORK SET TO BEGIN ON HOOSIER PASS
SUMMIT COUNTY – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) begins upgrading a three-mile segment on the north side of Hoosier Pass next week. Work involves rotomilling and asphalt paving, including utilization of recycled asphalt, cross culvert replacements, rumble strip installation, seeding, mulching and striping.
The project is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 16. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays. Drivers can anticipate delays up to 20 minutes as flaggers alternate a single lane of traffic between mile 79 (three miles north of the summit) and mile 82. The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph and vehicles wider than nine feet will not be allowed through the area during work hours.
“Drivers will need to anticipate some extra travel time to travel Hoosier Pass but summer’s the only time we can pave in a high mountain environment,” said CDOT Project Engineer Mike Voxakis. “We completed a similar project on the upper three miles of the pass a couple of years ago and this continues the improvement that we made to Highway 9, a road that’s become a heavily traveled commuter route between Summit and Park counties.”
Construction will be suspended for the Independence and Labor Day holidays and for other events in Breckenridge, Fairplay or Alma, as necessary.
Scott Contracting Inc. of Henderson, CO is the contractor for the $1.9 million project. It is scheduled for completion in September 2008.
