CDOT COMPLETES INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENT PROJECT AT 62ND AVENUE AND WARD ROAD
ARVADA – Earlier this week, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and its contractor, K.E.C.I. Colorado, Inc., completed the intersection improvement project at Ward Road (State Highway 72) and 62nd Avenue. The project installed raised traffic islands on 62nd Avenue at both the eastbound and westbound approaches to Ward Road.
“It is important for motorists to pay attention to the signage in the area as the intersection improvements have made some significant changes to traffic movements,” said CDOT Traffic Engineer Leela Rajasekar. “Several turn movements from 62nd Avenue onto Ward Road and those that involve crossing over Ward Road have been eliminated in order to improve safety at the intersection.”
The islands that were installed prohibit traffic in both directions of 62nd Avenue from making left turns onto Ward Road and also from crossing over Ward Road. Only right turns from 62nd Avenue to Ward Road will be allowed. Left turns will still be allowed from both northbound and southbound Ward Road onto eastbound and westbound 62nd Avenue.
“Traffic data showed a pattern of broadside accidents at the intersection with the majority of the accidents occurring as a result of eastbound or westbound 62nd Avenue vehicles making a through or left turn movement,” added Rajasekar. “By eliminating these movements, we can address the safety issues at this intersection without adversely impacting traffic on Ward Road.”
The $46,000 project began on Monday, June 9th and took about one week to complete. CDOT would like to thank motorists for their patience and cooperation during the project.
