NEW CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

PAVING PROJECT SLATED TO BEGIN LATER THIS MONTH ON US 34 IN YUMA

YUMA COUNTY – On Monday, July 14 th, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will begin a resurfacing project on US 34 between mileposts 222.4 and 224.5, which is in Yuma. The project will resurface US 34 in asphalt, reconstruct the US 34/Main Street and US 34/State Highway (SH) 59 intersections in concrete and replace some curb and gutter and handicap ramps

“We will complete the project in several different phases over a three-month period and will impact traffic in different ways depending on the work taking place,” said CDOT Project Engineer Jeff Vickers. “We will do our best to reduce the traffic impacts, but motorists should be prepared for some delays, temporary alignments and detour routes.”

The project will be completed in three phases as follows (please note that this a tentative schedule only):

• July 14 th-July 28 th : The first phase will consist of curb and gutter and handicap ramp replacement in some areas along US 34. During this phase, motorists can expect single lane closures in each direction of US 34 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
• July 28 th-August 29 th : The next phase of the project will reconstruct the US 34/Main Street and US 34/SH 59 intersections in concrete. During this phase, motorists can expect various temporary alignments and possible detour routes. More information will be released as construction progresses to this phase.
• August 29 th-October 31 st : The final phase of the project will rotomill and pave the rest of US 34 in asphalt. During the phase, traffic will be realigned onto the westbound lanes so that eastbound US 34 can be paved. Once work is complete on the eastbound lanes, traffic will be realigned to the eastbound lanes so that work can begin on the westbound lanes.

Throughout the project, delays are expected and alternate routes are advised. CDOT would like to reminder motorists to be patient, plan ahead and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

LaFarge North America, Inc. is the contractor of this $4 million project, which will be complete by the end of October 2008.
