HIGHWAY 67/CR 81 INTERSECTION PROJECT BEGINS

TELLER COUNTY – A safety improvement project at the State Highway 67/Teller County Road 81 intersection, north of Cripple Creek, is underway. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project includes construction of a left turn lane from southbound SH 67 to southbound CR 81 and a new right turn lane from northbound SH 67 to southbound CR 81. Work also involves asphalt paving, repairing and extending culverts, embankment and erosion control work, signing and striping.

Initial work began on Monday, June 16. Traffic impacts are minimal during the first week of the project, with only shoulder closures in place.

Beginning the week of Monday, June 23, drivers can expect occasional delays of up to 15 minutes between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays, as traffic is stopped or reduced to a single lane, with flaggers alternating vehicles through the work zone. The speed limit will be reduced to 30 mph.

“This will allow traffic to flow much better and improve safety through the Gillette Flats area,” says CDOT Project Manager Tom McGhghy. “By having separate turn lanes, it’ll eliminate the backups that can develop at this busy intersection.”

Kiewit Western Inc. of Littleton, CO is the contractor for the $1 million project. It is scheduled for completion in September 2008.
