Asphalt Shortage May Impact Numerous CDOT Projects

STATEWIDE – Due to a national asphalt and polymer shortage, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has begun the process of reviewing its 2008 summer highway projects to identify those that may be impacted and what actions should be taken. The asphalt shortage is expected to be short-term but has the potential to affect 34 of CDOT’s projects this summer. Priority will be given to projects on more heavily traveled routes, areas with the most significant pavement damage or those in the middle of construction. Possible actions may include:

Delaying work until next year Extending project completion time Using a different pavement material/design Partially completing a project until additional asphalt can be secured

The projects are:

Denver Metro

Central

Western

North/Northeast

Southwest

South/Southeast

In the coming weeks as more information from the asphalt industry becomes available, CDOT will provide updates as to how the above-mentioned projects may be affected, if at all, and what actions, if any, are necessary.
