Frequently Asked Questions
This website will keep you up to date on the project schedule, meetings and notices, and how you can participate.
Where is the project located?
The project encompasses approximately six miles of US 34, extending between US 287 and Larimer County Road (LCR) 3. The project area is located within the city of Loveland’s Growth Management Area. The North Front Range Metropolitan Planning Organization (NFRMPO, which is the North FrontRange Transportation and Air Quality Planning Council or NFRT & AQPC) considers it a “regionally significant corridor” providing access to adjacent businesses and downtown Loveland, as well as serving as a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, 32 miles to the west.

Why is CDOT proposing this study?
The purpose of the study is to provide an improved transportation corridor in northern Colorado, between US 287 and LCR 3, which would meet the following needs: (1) improve current and future traffic mobility, (2) improve transportation safety, and (3) accomodate 2030 travel demand.

Who is leading the study?
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is the lead agency. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is conducting this study and will work closely with the cities of Loveland, Johnstown, and Windsor as well as Larimer County to identify the best solutions for the US 34 corridor. FHWA will make the final decision on the selection of a Preferred Alternative.

What are the benefits?
The NFRMPO has prepared a regional 2030 traffic forecast based on ongoing and approved development. Traffic is expected to double by 2030. This project will address future traffic volumes and look at ways to reduce the current and future congestion and associated access and safety problems.

How Does This Study Relate to Other Projects along US 34:

What is the North I-25 Front Range EIS Project?
A current project that encompasses the US 34 area is the North I-25 Front Range Environmental Impact Statement. This is a CDOT project to improve mobility between the Denver metropolitan area and population centers along the I-25 corridor north to the Fort Collins-Welligton area.
