The U.S. 50 Corridor East project team has been working on the development of alternatives, analyses of potential impacts associated with each alternative, and the screening of those alternatives by applying specific criteria. In the summer of 2007, we held public meetings to gather input from you. We are now preparing the Draft Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) which we anticipate will be available for your review in the spring of 2009.

The DEIS is the culmination of the research and input (from the communities, agencies and others) on the project thus far. This document will disclose all anticipated U.S. 50 improvements and the impacts associated with them.

When the DEIS is available for public review, the project team will post a notice on this site and in local newspapers. Some time during the 45-day review period, the project team will schedule public hearings for communities, agencies, individuals, and others to offer comments (verbally or in writing) about the content, thoroughness, and conclusions of the DEIS.

Public hearings offer a formal setting for communities, agencies and others, to offer comment. The four meetings will be held, one in Lamar, Las Animas, La Junta and Pueblo, which are the Pueblo, Otero, Bent and Prowers county seats, respectively. Look for a notice announcing these hearings early next year (2009). During the 45-day review period, comments will be accepted in writing or verbally as voiced at one of the four public hearings.

Finally, taking into account the comments received from the public and affected agencies, FHWA will prepare and issue the Final Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS), which will identify the preferred alternative. A Record of Decision (ROD) will then be issued that will identify the type and general location of transportation improvements to be pursued in a Tier 2 environmental document and the reason for choosing those improvements.
