TRAFFIC ADVISORY
EMERGENCY ROCK SCALING TO TAKE PLACE EARLY
NEXT WEEK ON US 34 NEAR ESTES PARK
LARIMER COUNTY On Monday, August 25th and Tuesday, August 26th, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will conduct emergency rock scaling operations on US 34 at milepost 66.738, which is near Estes Park. The work is being conducted at the site of a rock slide that occurred on Saturday, August 16th, which brought down one large SUV-sized rock and numerous smaller rocks.
The rock slide last weekend was not a huge slide and it was not unusual considering the amount of rain we received, said CDOT Rockfall Specialist Ty Ortiz. We just want to be sure that all of the loose rocks are removed before we get another heavy rain and the rock scaling operations will help us accomplish this task.
During the work, motorists can expect intermittent full closures of US 34 near milepost 66 from approximately 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. The length of the intermittent closures will depend on how much material is brought down during each scaling operation, but it is likely the closures will last approximately 20-minutes each time. Motorists should be prepared for major delays and alternate routes are strongly advised.
CDOT would like to remind motorists to plan ahead, pay attention and Slow for the Cone Zone.
All work should be completed by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, weather permitting.
