WESTBOUND TRAFFIC SWITCH TONIGHT –
NO NAME TUNNEL

GARFIELD COUNTY – Work to rehabilitate the tunnel lining through the I-70 No Name Tunnel east of Glenwood Springs is progressing on schedule and now westbound traffic will be switched tonight, August 19.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS: Currently, the left lane (or inside lane) is closed as crews work over the inside lane. Crews will begin to switch traffic to this left (inside) lane around 11 PM, and intend to have this completed by 8 A.M. on Wednesday morning.  (Concrete barrier work for the lane shift will continue on Wednesday night and into Thursday.) Motorists are strongly advised to drive slowly and stay alert for shifts in lanes and crews working.

PROJECT SUMMARY: This project began last September 2007 and was suspended for the winter in December 2007. Tunnel work had resumed on April 7 to rehabilitate the lining of the I-70 No Name Tunnel at mile marker 119. The Colorado Department of Transportation contracted this work to BTE Concrete Formwork LLC for $2.7 million.

Single-lane closures in each direction will be in place 24/7 between mile markers 117 and 119—motorists can expect traffic slowing and delays until the project’s completion, scheduled for end of October 2008. A width restriction of 14 feet will be in place through the duration of the project.

The project involves removal of the tunnel lining (which consists of porcelain-painted metal), repair of existing cracks, and the replacement of lining with approximately 60,000 square feet of 4” X 4” ceramic tiles (similar to the lining in the Hanging Lake Tunnel). Work will also include guardrail replacement in the tunnels.
