HIGHWAY 69 SAFETY PROJECT SET TO START
HUERFANO COUNTY – A Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) safety improvement project along State Highway 69, northwest of Walsenburg, is scheduled to begin in mid-August.
Work includes new guardrail, retaining walls and culvert extensions at various locations along SH 69, between the Walsenburg area and Gardner (mile 0-24). Curve slopes also will flattened where pipes are being extended to increase driver safety.
Beginning Monday, August 18, delays up to 15 minutes can be expected from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, as flaggers alternate traffic through the work zone. The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph through the active work zone. Vehicles wider than 12 feet also will be restricted from traveling through the work zone during project hours. During non-working hours, traffic will need to be reduced to one lane where retaining walls are being constructed, requiring use of a temporary signal to alternate northbound and southbound traffic through the work zone. Delays will be minimal.
Kiewit Western Inc. of Littleton, CO is the contractor for the $569,000 project. It is scheduled for completion in October 2008.
