November 13, 2008 - Powers/Woodmen
Interchange Project Completed
- The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has finished
constructing a grade-separated interchange at Powers Boulevard (SH
21) and Woodmen Road.
Construction of the new interchange improves safety
and relieves congestion by separating traffic between Powers and
Woodmen, provides new ramps for better access to and from both roadways
and allows Powers traffic to pass through the area signal-free.
An average of 100,000 vehicles travel through the area every day
- 60,000 on Powers; 40,000 on Woodmen.
As part of the project, CDOT also completed the
first segment of a multi-use trail that safely accommodates bicyclists
and pedestrians through the interchange area. It is part of multi-agency
approach (including Colorado Springs & El Paso County) and long-range
plan to build a trail system paralleling Woodmen Road between Interstate
25 and Falcon. R.E. Monks Construction Company of Colorado Springs
was the contractor for the $26-million project.
“This was an amazing effort by R.E. Monks
to reduce the inconvenience to the traveling public,” said
Mark Andrew, CDOT resident engineer. “We awarded the project
in January 2007, expecting it to be finished in mid 2009. But now
we’re glad to say it was completed ahead of schedule, within
budget and now benefiting the traveling public.” ##
